Packing Tips For Your Big Move

Packing Tips For Your Big Move

Moving is not something that most people look forward to. Of course, that only applies to the actual physical part of moving. Moving to a new place, having a new job, a new school, a new life, can all be really exciting, but having to actually pack up your belongings and move them from one place to the next is not something we think of as fun.

At Coastal Moving & Storage, we put some of the fun back into moving because we take the not so fun parts and do them for you. But there are times when you want to, or need to, do the packing yourself.

One of the best tips we can give you when packing for yourself is to be sure you are prepared for the time before the move and prepared for your time after the move.

This takes a little prior planning on your part, but is well worth it when you save yourself from possible headaches caused by the stress of being unprepared. You can avoid such scenes as struggling to find clothes when it’s your first day at the new job, or having to go for take-out food because you can’t find the darn can opener or a dish to eat on.

One way or another, moving is usually very stressful. So here are a few tips you can follow to prevent some of that extra stress you don’t need.

  • DON’T use big boxes to pack heavy things like books in. The big box will become way too heavy to support the weight. Most cardboard moving boxes are not created to hold and move large, heavy items without breaking apart.
  • Wrap up loose items like desk supplies. You can use rubber bands, tape, or string to tie up items that can get thrown around the inside of a box.
  • DON’T throw away your grocery bags. Keep them for when you need to move. Plastic grocery bags can be used for numerous things. Use them to:
  • Roll them width-wise into a rope like length and use them to tie stuff together.
  • Use them to keep drawer items separate, such as socks from underwear.
  • Use them wadded up as padding.
  • Excellent for transporting wet or cold items.
  • Put a few in your suitcase for dirty clothes.
  • Tie up all the wires on appliances and things like lamps, TV’s, computers, monitors, etc. One easy method is to wrap the wire around several times around itself and tape it onto the appliance.
  • Keep any screws used to assemble furniture in a zip lock plastic bag. Tape the bag securely onto the piece of furniture, somewhere where it won’t be in the way of the mover’s hands or has a risk of getting knocked off.
  • Be sure to pull off bed-frame wheels and keep them where you can find them easily later.
  • Pack up a box of needed now kitchen and bathroom supplies. That way when you move, you will only have one box to find for a few days. Have essentials in the box such as a few dishes and cups, a little silverware, a good cutting knife, can opener, some dish detergent, a towel and washcloth, and toilette paper.
  • Pack a bag of clothes to provide one week’s worth of clothing for everyone. You don’t want to have to worry about doing laundry or finding clothes in order to go to work or get the kids off to the new school.

However you pack, just be sure you are keeping in mind that you should be making things easier on yourself, not more complicated. So staying organized in your packing method is a huge time saver later. And remember, we are always here to help you at any time!
